This set of labs teach and demonstrate the fundamentals of interfacing with a variety of sensors commonly used in mechatronic systems, including pressure, flex, infrared, visible light, magnetism and temperature sensors; and techniques and limitations of their practical applications. Through theory and exercises, students will learn how to collect data from sensors, calibrate sensors, and use sensors to identify the natural frequency of material.

Switch Debounce Analysis

Students learn the concept of switch debounce, and complete an exercise to use the NI ELVISmx Oscilloscope to measure the debounce of the micro switch and push button.

Switches and LEDs

Students learn about the operation of different types of of switches and LEDs. They complete exercises to take data from and analyze optical, micro, and push button switches, and use the switches to control LEDs.

Temperature Sensors

Students learn about different temperature sensors and the operation of the thermister on the board, and then complete an exercise to collect temperature data and calibrate the thermister to a specification.

Encoder

Students learn about the operation of a rotary incremental encoder, and complete an exercise to collect data, analyze the A, B, and I signals, and calibrate the encoder to a specification.

Magnetic Field Sensor

Students complete an exercise to collect angular position data from a magnetic field sensor and calibrate it to match a specification.

Optical Position

Students complete an exercise to collect angular position data from an optical sensor and calibrate it to match a specification.

Sonar Sensor

Students complete an exercise to collect position data from a sonar sensor, and calibrate it to meet a specification.

Infrared Sensor

Students complete an exercise to collect position data from an infrared sensor, and calibrate it to match a specification.

Potentiometer

Students complete an exercise to collect voltage data from a potentiometer, and calibrate it to match a specification for the relationship between rotation and voltage.

Piezo Sensor

Students complete an exercise to collect vibration data from a piezo sensor and find the natural frequency of a plastic band.

Pressure Sensor

Students complete an exercise to collect data from and calibrate a pressure sensor. The pressure sensor is used to measure the change in pressure in a container caused by moving the position of a plunger.

Strain Gage with Flexible Link

Students complete an exercise to collect data from a strain gauge, calibrate it, and find the natural frequency of the flexible link it's measuring.

Sensor Properties

Students learn about various sensor properties that are often found in technical specifications, such as resolution and range.
