This set of labs introduce a variety of actuators commonly used in mechatronic systems. Each lab teaches students about the fundamentals of an actuator, design considerations, common specifications, interfacing, and operation. Through hands-on experimentation, students learn principles of electromagnetic actuation, linear and PWM actuators, brushed and brushless DC motors, stepper motors, and servos. Each ABET-aligned lab includes an overview of theory, in lab exercises, and assessments.

Solenoid

Students learn about magnetic fields of coiled conductors, and implement electromagnetic field theory to actuate a solenoid.

DC Motor Amplifiers

Students learn about linear amplifiers, PWM amplifiers, H-Bridges, and deadband while controlling a DC motor.

Brushless DC Motor

Students learn about Flemming's left hand rule, brushed DC motors, and brushless DC motors, and use PWM to control a brushless DC motor.

Stepper Motor

Students learn about stepper motor winding configurations, excitation modes, and control, and use full and half stepping to control the stepper motor.

Servo Motor

Students study the operation of stepper motors and use PWM to control one.
